
Kent Lorenz
Kent A. Lorenz is an assistant professor of Physical Education and Physical Activity in the Department of Kinesiology at San Francisco State University. He completed a PhD in Physical Education and a graduate certificate in Statistics from Arizona State University, along with a Master's of Science in Exercise Physiology from San Diego State University and undergraduate degrees in Education and Physical Education from the University of Alberta. His research interests are centered around creating positive environments for physical education and physical activity in schools using the Comprehensive School Physical Activity Program guidelines and a behavioral ecological support framework. As a result of his research during his doctoral program, Kent was co-recipient of the inaugural Thomas L. McKenzie Outstanding Graduate Research Award from the Southwest District of SHAPE America in 2014.
Research Lab
Dr. Lorenz conducts his research in school-setting; both during class and out-of-class physical activity opportunities. He uses systematic observation and developed an observation instrument to assess the environmental characteristics of school settings that promote and reinforce physical activity (System for Observing Behavioral Ecology of Youth in Schools; SOBEYS) in conjunction with physical activity measures, including (System for Observing Play and Leisure Activity in Youth [SOPLAY]; McKenzie et al., 2000), pedometers and accelerometers. In addition, Dr. Lorenz and Dr. Jimmy Bagley of San Francisco State University are in the process of creating a Strength Lab to improve the instructional characteristics of new Kinesiology professionals and measure physical and muscular changes in response to resistance training.
Projects
Dr. Lorenz is currently collaborating with researchers at Arizona State University to investigate comprehensive school physical activity programs and conceptual physical education (e.g., Fitness for Life, Corbin et al., 2010) in rural schools in Arizona. As a faculty member at San Francisco State University, he is developing research projects in cooperation with the San Francisco Unified School District to increase physical activity opportunities within and outside of class time.
