Masters in Kinesiology (Minimum 30 units)

Frequently Asked Questions about the graduate program.

Students in the M.S. Kinesiology program apply multiple perspectives to problems related to exercise, fitness, motor skill and/or development in the contexts of activities of daily living, play, games, sport, and other forms of human physical activity. Graduates exit the program with strong theoretical and problem solving skills, experience in the evaluation of current research in the field, and knowledge in the field of kinesiology. They are able to apply these skills in a wide variety of careers as well as further graduate study.

The Master of Science in Kinesiology is 30 units and includes a core, an emphasis, electives, and a culminating experience. Students studying a specific emphasis, in consultation with their advisor, will select electives and a culminating experience that best meets their professional/personal needs. Final approval of the student's program rests with the graduate faculty. Students are expected to complete this degree in a maximum of 5 years.

Requirements to Apply

2. A personal statement which identifies the emphasis you wish to apply for, any specific areas of study within the emphasis, your personal and professional goals.

3. A minimum of 4.0 on the GRE writing component (for United States and International applicants)

4. International students must achieve a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper); 213 (computer); 80 (internet) or 7.0 (IELTS).

5. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 units is required for admission in the M.S. program.

6. The following courses below must be met depending on the emphasis to which the student applies. All pre-requisite courses must be completed before applying to the M.S. program in Kinesiology.

Exercise Physiology

A minimum grade of B in each of the following courses: human anatomy and human anatomy lab, human physiology and human physiology lab, exercise physiology and exercise physiology lab, and statistics.

Movement Science

A minimum grade of B in each of the following courses: human anatomy and human anatomy lab, human physiology and human physiology lab, biomechanics, motor learning and statistics.

Physical Activity: Social Scientific Perspective

A minimum grade of B in three of the following or equivalent courses: youth development, sport and exercise psychology, cultural and socialogical perspectives of physical activity, motor learning or motor development.
