Regular physical activity substantially reduces the risk of dying from coronary heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death, and decreases the risk for stroke, colon cancer, diabetes, and high blood pressure. It also helps to control weight; contributes to healthy bones, muscles, and joints; reduces falls among older adults; helps to relieve the pain of arthritis; reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; and is associated with fewer hospitalizations, physician visits, and medications (CDC). However to be active in life is a result of an effective physical education program beginning in early childhood. It must help students K-12 to build both physical and behavioral skills needed to be physically active throughout life. The presence of physical education teacher in schools is crucial to assure children and youth the first steps for a healthy active life style.
"Just as students first learn basic words and basic sentences, they must also learn to first master basic physical skills. As children develop, they need opportunities to practice and apply skills in games. This is analogous to the need for developing readers to start reading books. With further development, students can learn ways to enhance their skills and apply them to the sports and activities that most interest them. The BS Degree in Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Physical Education prepares students for entry into a teaching credential program and graduate related studies. This course of studies satisfies state requirements for the Subject Matter Program in Physical Education and for departmental standards of competence in the subject matter of Physical Education.
This degree emphasis will prepare students for advanced studies in physical education for elementary, middle and high schools. In addition, students who wish to pursue graduate studies will be very well prepared to do so.
Adapted Physical Education- Added Authorization
Adapted physical education is an individualized program of developmental activities, exercises, games, rhythms, and sport designed to meet the unique physical education needs of individuals with disabilities. Adapted physical education is an active program of physical. It supports the attainment of the benefits of physical activity by meeting the needs of students who might otherwise be relegated to passive experiences. In establishing adapted physical education programs, educators work with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and professionals in various disciplines. Adapted physical education may employ developmental, community-based, or other orientations and may use a variety of teaching styles. By completing the courses a long with the Subject Matter Credential in Physical Education, a Specialist Credential in Adapted Physical Education can be achieved.

At the present time, job opportunities within the area of Adapted Physical Education are abundant within the public school setting. The demand for adapted physical education teachers far exceeds the number of existing credentialed teachers. It is estimated that there will numerous job opportunities in the future for individuals with a Specialist Credential in Adapted Physical Education.
